Installing a high-quality wireless backup camera system to your vehicle can play a big role in making your journeys safer and more convenient. Every time you get into your vehicle, you will not have to worry about moving your vehicle backwards or worry about what may be present behind it. You can clearly see the back on the rear and make safe decisions. Thus, it can help in adding an additional layer of safety to your vehicle.

In fact, there have also been regulations that demand that all vehicles get installed with backup technology by a specific deadline in the future. It is estimated that tens of thousands of injuries occur every year due to crashes associated with vehicle backup. Many of the victims are children under the age of 5. So when you invest in your car, truck, van or any other vehicle, you are also contributing to saving the lives of those around you.

Installing Wireless Backup Camera in Your Vehicle

Most vehicles don’t feature a wireless rear view camera. You can choose the right type of system and install it in your vehicle. Almost every vehicle will have blind spots behind it. This camera can help eliminate these blind spots and protect anyone who is behind you – from properties to people to animals to other vehicles.

You can get the system and install it yourself without any help. This guide explains how. It is worth noticing that there are many advantages of choosing wireless systems over wired ones.

Mount The Camera

One of the best places to install your wireless backup camera is on top of the vehicle’s rear license plate. Remove the screws holding the license plate. You can fix the camera in place using the same screws, atop the plate.

It is up to you to determine whether to use the same screws or screws with inaccessible heads so that no one else can remove the camera. Pin-in-hex style screw heads are considered effective in preventing people from removing the screws. If this seems not to be an ideal choice, you can also use a suction mount to install the cam inside the rear windshield.

Channel The Cable

You should then channel the cable based on the type of vehicle you have. Usually, the cable can be passed from behind a plastic trim to enter the vehicle’s cabin. The access will vary from one vehicle to another.

Power The Transmitter

Once the camera has been fixed, you should power the transmitter box. The transmitter box is available with the wireless backup system. It will have a pair of pre-stripped power cables that should be connected to the vehicle’s reverse light power.

Check the reverse lights behind your car and access their wires for power. This can require removing one of the rear light clusters to access the wires. These wires are a pair of black and white wires which are long and thin.

Make sure that the wires are connected appropriately to the positive and negative wires of the reverse light. Use a pair of pliers to ensure that the wires are connected thoroughly and safely.

Then connect the spade connectors with the transmitter box’s power leads. The lead ends are exposed. The spade connectors can then be connected to the wire taps (tapped earlier using the pliers).

If you are confused about which wires and cables should be connected, follow these tips:

  • Positive cable is red and it should be connected to the white power wire
  • The black cable is ground and it should be connected to the black wire (which is also the ground) on the vehicle.

Connecting Transmitter Box & Camera

You will need zip ties to secure the additional wire and connect the transmitter box and the wireless backup camera. These zip ties may or may not be available with you cam. Most of the time, you will have to source them yourselves. The two ties are for video and power.

Re-fix The Reverse Lights

Once you have made all the wire connections, fix the reverse lights back. If any body panels are opened, reattach them. You will then have to fix the camera’s receiver to the back of the wireless backup system. Usually, the connection is enabled through a tongue-in-groove slot system. Some of these systems have unique power cables to provide additional power for the GPS device.

Test The Wireless Backup Camera System

Make sure everything is in place and test the cam. Also check the reverse lights so that they are working properly as earlier. From a safety perspective, it is important that you get the assistance of another adult person when checking your new camera’s functioning. Get inside your vehicle and check if the receiver is sensing the cam and transmitter. It should start showing the rear view on the screen.

Now you can adjust the vertical position of the wireless backup camera based on what is most convenient to you. From now on, there will be no need for you to touch the camera. You should start seeing the rear view on the display every time you shift the gear into reverse. These above-mentioned steps should complete the process of installing the cam.

Using Wireless Backup Systems

It is recommended to use your wireless backup system along with the standard rear-view set up that includes the rear view mirror and side-view mirrors.  You shouldn’t just rely on one of these units. Safe vehicle backup requires proper coordination between all the three. At the same time, you shouldn’t shrug from looking back over your shoulder.

A wireless rear view camera is both about safety and convenience. No matter whether you have a hatchback, a sedan, a sports car, a truck or SUV or a larger vehicle, installing such a camera can help significantly increase safety around your vehicle. Among other benefits, it may also help in reducing your insurance premiums. So make sure to follow the above-mentioned steps to install a quality camera in your vehicle.
